TEFL Jobs in Japan

Like all the jobs on this site, you don't need to speak Japanese to teach English.

The placements outlined below are in state schools in Japan where you will be a teaching assistant in a class.

Our jobs in Japan are open to TEFL Earth graduates who have completed the 80-hour TEFL course.

Overview

Salary: 250,000 Yen, approximately $2900/£1800 p/m. (exchange rates can fluctuate)
Accommodation: You will be given plenty of help to find your own accommodation. A flat is between 50,000 and 70,000 Yen per month
Orientation: You will be met at the airport and be given a week of orientation and training. You will also be able to receive free Japanese lessons.
Locations: Mainly Fukoka, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Hamamtsu, Yokohama, Chiba City, Hitachi and Tokyo (not central Tokyo).
Contract length: 3 to 12 months, lengths of contracts depend on when you start, e.g. starting in March - 12 Months, April - 11 Months, May - 10 Months, June - 9 Months, July - 8 months, September - 7 months and October 6 months. (Contracts, however, are renewable)
Departure dates: March to January
Age of students: 6 - 18 years old
Living costs: Accommodation is between 50,000 and 70,000 p/m depending on location. You should budget for around $800/£500 p/m for living costs.

Requirements

  • Native English speaker or 12 years in an English Speaking Educational Institution
  • TEFL qualification (minimum 80-hour online TEFL course).
  • University degree holder.
  • Minimum 21 years of age

About the teaching

Your students will be 6 - 18 yrs and you will have about 30 students in every 45-minute class. You will be assisting a Japanese teacher and will have plenty of support and resources to plan and prepare your lessons.

Pay etc.

Salary: 250,000 yen approximately £1700 per month, tax is at about 7%.  Holiday: There are 19 school and public holidays throughout the year.
Hours: 8am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Bonus: You receive an attendance bonus which is included in your monthly salary.
Accommodation: You will be given the support you need. Often new teachers take on the apartments of teachers departing.
Travelling with a friend: it is hard to get the same school, though you may find the same area. The best time to apply is for March or September since this is when there are the most positions.

How to apply

You can apply directly to our partner and they will be in contact very shortly afterwards. The recruitment process is done face-to-face and will include presentations, interviews and a demonstration lesson. More details will be given once you have made your initial applicaton.

If you are successful in your interviews then our partners will apply for a Certificate of Eligibility which is taken to the Japanese Embassy and converted into a working visa. You should expect 1 - 2 months for this process depending on where you live.
