I have been in TEFL since BC 09. You can tell by the wrinkles! For me it all started with a decision. Do I continue with my boring job in a town that depresses me just to pay off my overdraft and keep the bank happy? Or, do I go to Greece and teach (which terrified me) thereby making me happy and keeping the bank, well, not as sad as it could be. The decision was easy to make in the end and I have never looked back since.
I taught in Greece for 6 years, learnt how to dance, play the bouzouki as well as becoming pretty good at Greek. The teaching was intense, 10 - 18 years old students from Elementary to Advanced level, you learn to be creative and keep the students involved, I loved it.
Finally, though, it was time to leave (after all, I'd only intended on staying a year) and with my newly acquired wife and child headed to France (I love cheese, not to mention a drop of the red stuff). In France, I was teaching Business English, a catch-all term that included 4-star generals, tour guides and taxi drivers. One more kid and a couple of years later, we returned to the UK where I began teacher training and have since trained all over the UK, Ireland and the USA.
As well as working full time for TEFL Earth, I continue training students online and on classroom-based courses. I love the opportunities just one TEFL course can offer, if it got me out of that mindless job and into a classroom, then it can help anyone.
