Russia is the largest country in the world. Around 17,075,400 km squared and the ninth largest population in the world. It offers just about everything, from the bustling city life of places like Moscow and St. Petersburg to its vast open spaces and peaceful rural towns. Temperatures range across the country from 40° above zero to 40° below zero.
Work
The work going for TEFL teachers in Russia is very diverse. The could be working with young learners, adults, business English or examination preparation. It is important that you are flexible with who you teach in this country as you will find a greater number of job opportunities. The average salary for a TEFL teacher is around $1900 (€1324 or £1157 per month). You can live well with this amount of money.
The standards of efficiency can by pretty low in Russia. If you are going to be teaching there, be prepared to work in a very laidback environment where things will get done, but all in good time! There is a shortage in teaching aids in many places in the country, so it is necessary to be resourceful.
It is advised to secure a teaching job in Russia before heading out there. This will speed up the visa process which your employer should organise for you. Be sure to ask about this. A good site to look at is www.visarus.co.uk. You will find a large amount of Russian companies on here and there is also a forum for TEFL teachers living in the country.
Living
Employers usually arrange or help foreign teachers with accommodation. This can be in small shared flats, with host families or student hostels. If you are looking for accommodation yourself, teachers often lodge with landladies. This is cheap and there are no shortages of landladies.

“ Flexibility to work when you want, quick response from tutor in marking assignments, helpful feedback, challenging in a good way so that you are encouraged to really think about how you would apply the theory in practice. ” Jennifer Bruce
